People are coming over to your house in less than an hour. Your house is immaculate, except for one thing, the glass on your shower doors. What can you do? Ban your guests from using the bathroom? That may work, but you’re bound to have some very uncomfortable people by the end of the night. Of course, there’s no need for drastic measures like that, there are four items already in your bathroom that can help you get your shine on.

Liquid Soap

It works to get your hands clean, so why shouldn’t it work on shower glass? Simply take a washcloth and put a few pumps of liquid soap on there and put under hot water. Work up a foamy lather and scrub down both sides of the glass. Once you’ve got the doors lathered up, get a new wash cloth and wet it down and wipe away the suds. Let the doors air dry and then smile at how clean and germ free your shower doors are.

Bar Soap

This is very similar to liquid soap, however, there’s only need for one washcloth. Wet the washcloth down and wipe both sides of the doors. Now, take your bar of soap (not your fancy guest soap of course, that stuff is expensive!) and in a circular pattern, scrub each door. Once you’ve got a good layer of soap on each side, take the wet washcloth and wipe away all the soap. Just like before, let the doors air dry and don’t forget to make sure that no one uses that particular bar of soap.

Body Wash

If you have an extra loofah sitting around, pour a nickel sized amount of body wash on it, otherwise use a washcloth again. Work the body wash into a good lather and scrub down the doors just as you would your own body. Loofahs are especially great for this method because of their roughness which will get all that extra soap scum off the door with minimal effort.

Air Freshener

It’s a bathroom essential and a great way to put shine back in your glass. Simply spray a healthy dose of air freshener on the glass and wipe it off the same you would with other store bought glass cleaners. Not only is this the simplest method, but it will also make your bathroom smell great. Which is always a plus when it comes to bathrooms.

So there you go, four quick methods to cleaning your glass shower doors. At least now you’ll have no excuse for trying to quarantine your bathroom. Your future guests will be thankful for that.

The porta-potty or portable toilet is often the butt of jokes from comedians. But this portable toilet, housed in its own sturdy plastic outhouse, makes it possible to enjoy some semblance of civilized plumbing facilities even while working at construction sites or attending festivals, fairs and events located in more rustic settings.

Most porta-potty units contain both a urinal as well as a sit-down toilet attached to a waste tank, along with a sink dispensing gray water for hand washing operated by a foot pump, a toilet paper dispenser, soap and paper towels and sometimes hand sanitizers.

The job of cleaning a porta-potty to keep it in sanitary working condition may not be the most glamorous job on the planet, but it is an important one, nonetheless. large units used by a large number of people should be cleaned at minimum on a weekly basis, depending upon the volume of usage. Individual travel-sized porta-potties should be given a cleaning on a daily basis to minimize odors.

Wear protection

Since you are dealing with human waste, it’s important to wear eye protection, disposable gloves and limit your skin exposure while going about your cleaning chores. Some people also wear a disposable shower cap to protect their hair.

Use proper cleaning supplies

A quick swipe with a damp cloth just won’t cut it when cleaning a porta-potty. Use a disinfectant that contains a degreaser in a spray bottle and apply the solution to the walls, floor, toilet seat and toilet cover, just about all surfaces that a person might come into contact with. Vacuum up the toilet paper and waste out of the holding tank for proper disposal. Then hose down the unit with hot water and let dry completely before spraying with a scented disinfectant with a pleasant scent such as lemon or citrus which will counteract the aroma of feces and urine.

Cleaning traveling porta-potties

If your porta potty is designed for singular use while boating or camping, the same cleaning rules apply in terms of wearing protection, wiping down everything with disinfectant, and disposing of the waste tank either by pouring into a regular toilet for flushing or pouring it into a heavy duty plastic container or bag for later disposal if you are out in the wild. Usually the unit detaches into two pieces so you can reach the waste container more easily prior to hosing down both pieces with clean water and reattaching both pieces for future use.

A dirty toothbrush has many disgusting germs that can be harmful but there are several ways to clean a toothbrush and keep it germ free. It is important to remember that hands should be washed with soap and warm water before a toothbrush is handled. Also a toothbrush should be washed by running hot water over it for a few seconds before and after every use.

One of the best methods to keep a toothbrush germ free is to mix one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water and swish the toothbrush around in the mixture for at least thirty seconds before using. If desired the toothbrush can be rinsed in warm water to get rid of the taste of peroxide. Mouthwash that contains alcohol can be used in place of peroxide.

Another good way to clean a toothbrush is to soak it the toothbrush. A good solution to soak a toothbrush in is undiluted vinegar and to soak it overnight every week or two. It does not need to be soaked every night. The vinegar will kill most of the germs and bacteria.

Boiling water can also be used for cleaning a toothbrush. An easy way to do this is to place a toothbrush in a cup or mug and poor enough boiling water in the mug or cup to cover the bristles. For best results the toothbrush should be left in the mug for three to five minutes.

Bleach is another very effective way to clean a toothbrush. Mix one part bleach with one part water in a cup. About a fourth cup of each is enough just as long as the toothbrush bristles are covered. It should be swished around in the bleach mixture for about thirty seconds and then rinsed thoroughly before using the toothbrush.

Washing a toothbrush occasionally in the dishwasher is another great method to use. It may seem a little odd but it will deep clean the toothbrush and rid it of unwanted germs and bacteria. Make certain that the toothbrush is placed on the top rack to keep it from melting from the heat. Run the dishwasher through its regular cycle and use dishwasher detergent.

There are many effective ways to clean a toothbrush, but it is important to note that after so many uses a toothbrush has to be replaced. Dentists recommend that a toothbrush be replaced every three to four months. It is also a good idea to replace a toothbrush after having a cold or the flu.

Shower curtains whether they are cloth, vinyl or plastic will get dirty due to several factors including hard water, soap scum and mildew. Luckily there are simple methods that will clean a shower curtain.

One way to clean dirty shower curtains is to wash them in the washing machine using warm or cold water. Then add one cup of regular laundry detergent and one half to one cup of bleach. Let the curtains go through the normal or delicate wash cycle and then remove them from the washing machine. Hang them back on the curtain rod and allow them to drip dry in the tub. The curtains will be clean and will have a fresh smell.

Another effective way to remove soap scum from a shower curtain is to wash them in the washing machine using one cup of baking soda and then wash them in warm water on the regular wash cycle. Fabric softener can be added to the wash to give the curtains a fresh scent.

One other way to clean a shower curtain effectively is to generously spray the dirty curtain with any commercial spray cleanser or with a bleach solution. Wait for ten minutes or so and then scrub away the dirt with as bathroom scrubber. A hand held scrubber will work just fine or one with an extended handle will work even better because this can be done while the curtains are still hanging up. There will be no need to take them down or wash them in the machine. After the scrubbing is completed rinse them thoroughly with warm water using the shower head and allow them to dry.

The following are a few other handy tips to remember. One is to add two large white or light colored towels to the wash. This will help prevent wrinkles and will scrub away the dirt. Also it is suggested that shower curtain not be put in the dryer. The plastic and vainly ones will melt.

There are a few other helpful tips. One is to always remove the shower curtain rings before putting the curtains in the washing machine. Another good tip to remember is that instead of using bar soap use a body wash or gel because bar soap is known for causing soap scum.

Finally it is a good idea to soak shower curtains in salt water for about 20 minutes after they have been cleaned in washing machine. This will help keep mildew from forming. Mildew cannot stand up to saltwater.

These effective and easy to follow tips will clean a shower curtain and leave them looking and smelling fresh.

You walk into your bathroom, and are met by the horror of an unseemly stain on your porcelain sink. Panic sets in as you think desperately how you can clean it without scratching it, but how? Take away your worry and try one of the three solutions to clean your porcelain sink, and you will find that your concern will melt away like the stain.

One of the easiest and most accessible things to use in cleaning porcelain is liquid dish washing detergent. Take a cotton cloth, wet it down until damp and then pour a small amount of the detergent onto the rag. Gently scrub the cloth over the area where the stain is, and then rinse. If the stain seems to be extra stubborn, put some dish detergent over it and let it sit for awhile. One caution, do not let it sit too long or the detergent will dry into a solid mass that is hard to get off, but if you wait a few minutes, gently scrub it with a wet rag and it should take away the stain without scratching the sink.

Baking soda is another wonderful, versatile substance that everyone has around the house. Pour some over where the stain is set in the sink and then take a wet rag and mildly scrub it into the stain. The baking soda is just abrasive enough to lift the stain, but not to scratch the porcelain. It may take a few times to remove the stain if it is especially set in, but baking soda is a great way to get it out. This is also an environmentally friendly cleaner that doesn’t use harsh chemicals.

A third option is to a mixture of vinegar and water, mixed with a one to four ratio. Vinegar is acidic enough to be a solid cleaner, removes germs and stains very well, and is also chemical free. Spray the stain and let it sit for awhile, then return, spray again and scrub gently. You will be surprised how well this works. Vinegar is also very cheap to buy and good for many uses.

Porcelain sinks are beautiful in any home, but do require special care. This doesn’t mean that you have to use expensive, chemical laden cleaners to remove a stain here or there. Using a little creativity and these cheap, safe alternatives you will find that your sink looks like new and pristine.

Cleaning tile grout is not usually a fun thing to consider doing. There are many natural substances, as well as cleaners which can be purchased for this specific purpose. Tile grout is an area of most homes that needs to be cleaned more often that it is usually cleaned because of the sheer drudgery of this chore. Cleaning tile grout need not be such a chore, since there are several ways to clean it. Natural ways to clean the grout are the items to be covered here. Natural substances which can be safely used to clean tile grout, and kill germs and make the grout white again.

Lemon Juice and Salt

Lemon juice and salt are great cleaners for tile grout. By soaking the grout areas in between the tiles with lemon juice, it will kill the mold and bacteria that tend to invade grout between tiles. This method for cleaning the tile grout is great for kitchens so that there is no danger of chemical contamination of food preparation areas or direct contamination of foods. The first thing to discuss is that a lemon concentrate, such as a real lemon type product or if desired fresh lemons or lemon juice can also be used. If using a bottled lemon product, pour lemon into an empty spray bottle or put in a bowl and either spray, brush or sponge lemon juice onto the grout areas to be cleaned. If using fresh lemons, the lemon can be squeezed and put into a bottle or bowl or other small container, (use plastic due to a reaction which could happen if using metal) or the fresh lemons can be cut in half and and rubbed into the grout areas to be cleaned. pour or squeeze some lemon juice into a bowl of standard table salt. If using fresh lemon, a lemon half can be dipped into the salt directly and then used to rub the stubborn stains from the grout. If using a concentrated or bottled lemon juice, use a toothbrush or other small brush to dip into the salt paste made from the lemon juice and salt. Rub or scrub with brush until clean and then rinse well with warm water on a wash cloth or cleaning cloth.

White Vinegar and Borax

White Vinegar and Borax is a great way to clean tile grout. Just spray or sponge vinegar onto the tile grout areas which need to be cleaned. Make a paste from in a plastic bowl or small bucket or other plastic container from borax and pour enough plain white vinegar into the borax to make a stiff paste. Use a toothbrush or other small, stiff brush, (a nail brush would work well) into the borax and vinegar paste and use to brush or scrub tile grout, the majority of germs and dirt and mold should come off with the vinegar alone, but use the borax paste to get stubborn stains removed. Rinse well with warm water on a cloth or sponge. This method would be great for bathrooms or other areas such as laundry rooms, or tile floors.

Lemon Juice and Baking Soda

Lemon Juice and baking soda is another great cleaner for kitchens tile grouts. The reason it is great is because these substances are edible and will not contaminate food or food preparation areas. Prepare and use lemon as used above in the Lemon juice and salt. Either bottled lemon or fresh lemon can be used in this method as well. Put lemon in spray bottle or use a small plastic or glass bowl and a sponge. (Never use metal, as the metal can react with the lemon juice.) Saturate the grout with the lemon juice, by either spraying or by sponging onto the grout. If using fresh lemons, rub the grout areas to be cleaned with the half lemon. The half lemons can be used to scrub with, as well. Make a paste from about 1-2 cups of baking soda in a bowl or other plastic container and just enough lemon juice to make a thick paste. Using a toothbrush or other small brush, used this paste to scrub stubborn spots from the grout which the lemon alone did not clean. Rinse with warm water on a cloth or a sponge.

These methods are all natural. All items can be purchased at any grocery or convenience store. Borax can be purchased in the laundry area of any grocery store. Borax is a natural substance which has been used for cleaning for many years. Whether using the lemon juice and salt method, or the vinegar and borax method or the lemon juice and baking soda method, the time it takes to clean the grout will be well spent and easy to do. Using natural substances to clean is also better for the environment, and many times cleans more effectively than chemical cleaners.

Everybody has had to face the annoying task of trying to unclog a sink drain. After numerous amounts of soap, grime, and grease have built up in the drain pipes, the pipes become no good and therefore are rendered useless. Over time they can become sluggish but if you take proper care and have a vigilant approach to keeping your sink drain clean then you will find that you will not have any problem at all.

As I have stated the best thing to do is keep a routine maintenance program to keep the drain clean. Every couple of days, try running hot water through the drain. This serves the same purpose as when you use hot water to clean and wash your clothing. This is a very good way to keep them clean plus get rid of any unwanted odors.

Try pouring baking soda down the drain. Then use a highly acidic liquid such as lemon juice or vinegar. Let it stand for about an hour then run the hot water down the drain. Better yet try using scolding or boiling water. This is a good way to get rid of any unwanted material that might be trapped into your drain pipes.

A good natural cleaning agent for drain pipes is saltwater. The brine of the salty water will help in eliminating odors plus help in the prevention of grease buildup. The most obvious way to clean your sink drain is buying a drain cleaner from the store. The main thing that you want to do is make sure that the drain cleaner does not have any chemicals that can be harmful or do any unwanted damage to your pipes. If you have plastic pipes make sure that the cleaner is viabile for plastic and that the container that the cleaner comes in is safe for proper garbage disposal.

The final measure that needs to be taken if you have clogged pipes is to call a plumber. It is them that do that sort of thing for a living. You can be doing your best as far as trying to clean and prevent backups but if the problem is not going away the best thing to do is call someone who knows what they are doing. In some cases there could be a blockage in the pipes where chemicals or hot water cannot do anything.

Keeping up a regular care program for your drain pipes is the best way to clean and prevent blockages. Go online and do some research for yourself. In the end, if there is a problem where you think you cannot solve it, call a plumber.

Hard water stains are caused by calcium and magnesium in the water, which creates what we call lime scale that tends to make our shower doors look particularly unattractive. A water softener can eliminate this problem, but is a bit more of an investment than most people want to afford. Fortunately there are some easy methods to removing those unsightly stains.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Combine one cup of vinegar with two tablespoons of baking soda for a natural and inexpensive, yet effective household cleaner. Apply the mixture to the hard water stains, let it sit for about twenty minutes, then use a steel wool pad to scrub the stubborn mineral deposits out of sight.

WD-40

WD-40 is a wonderful cure-all for many stubborn issues around the house, from squeaky hinges, to rusty lawn chairs, to, yes, removing hard water stains! Just spray onto the affected area, let it sit for about ten minutes, then use a steel wool pad to remove the stains. This method requires almost no elbow grease, but does need a follow-up of window cleaner to remove the oily product.

Lemonade

Think citric acid. Like the vinegar mix, the acidic qualities of this remedy will eat through the mineral deposits caused by hard water. For a surprisingly effective method to getting rid of those hard water stains while staying friendly to the environment, combine two-thirds of a cup of water to one packet of powdered lemonade mix. Use a steel wool pad to scrub the stains with the strong lemonade and they will soon disappear. As an alternative, cut a lemon in half and rub the halves onto the stains, then scrub with the pad.

No matter which method is used, vinegar and baking soda, WD-40, or the refreshing power of lemonade, hard water stains don’t stand a chance. No remedy will work if the glass has been permanently etched, so be sure to squeegee after every water use to prevent the lime scale from forming again. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and will also save a lot of elbow grease!

Maintain a Cleaning Schedule

You should clean your toilets at least twice a week. Trust me, the more you clean your toilet, the easier the job will be when you do have to do it. If you go for weeks or even months (yikes!) without cleaning your toilet, then when you do finally tackle the job, it’s not going to be an easy or fun one.

Use Toilet Cleaning Products

For starters you need good toilet bowl cleaners. Popular cleaners on the market such as bleach, Ajax, lysol, and special made toilet bowl cleaners all work very well. The goal is to not only leave your toilet looking clean and smelling fresh but to actually kill all of the germs as well. You will need a toilet scrubbing brush, rubber gloves and a sponge or paper towel. Once you have all of your tools in hand, you can start cleaning your toilet.

Many people put the cleaning products in the bowl and let them sit for awhile before they start to scrub the inside of the bowl. This is not a necessary step but if your toilet has not been cleaned for quite some time then it is probably a good idea to let it soak for awhile before you start scrubbing it.

Use a Toilet Brush

Take your toilet brush and swirl it around in the toilet in a circular motion scrubbing the sides and bottom of the bowl. Make sure you get the hard to reach underneath area of the rim of the bowl, bacteria and scum love to build up in that area. Once your toilet is scrubbed, flush it, then once your toilet bowl refills with fresh water, rinse the toilet scrubbing brush in the clean water, put it back into it’s holder and flush again.

Now put on your gloves and get your sponge or paper towel. Put some of your cleaner onto your rag and wipe the rim of the bowl and the bottom side of the toilet seat. Once that is clean, put your sit back down in it’s normal position with the lid up and get some bleach or rubbing alcohol. Apply it to a paper towel or piece of tissue paper and clean the top of your toilet seat and the bottom of your toilet bowl lid.

Follow those simple steps and it just a few minutes you will have a sparkling, fresh, bacteria free, clean toilet.
