Lamb’s wool rugs can be beautiful and exotic, but they can also be a real pain to clean. There just seems to be no easy way to do it. You can’t hand wash the rug because the pile gets mushed up and looks ratty, and you can’t just toss the lamb’s skin rug into the washing machine as it will ruin the pile, and you can’t leave it alone either because dirty lamb’s skin rugs look really dirty and unhealthy. So if you can’t scrub it and you can’t toss it into the washing machine what can you do_
Cleaning a lamb’s wool rug presents a challenge to the homeowner. If you scrub the rug, you can damage the pile permanently. The same thing can happen if your toss your wool rug in the washing machine. That doesn’t mean you have to either ruin your lamb’s wool rug or leave it soiled and stained, there is an easy way to wash it.
The first thing you will have to do is blot out any spills with a paper towel. You want to get rid of as much of the stain as you can without scrubbing the rug. Then you want to take your beautiful lamb’s skin rug outside and shake it, hang it up and bat at it with a broom to get rid of any loose dirt that may be trapped in it.
Now comes the cleaning part. So, you want to fill a bucket with warm water and then pour in two caps of very soft laundry detergent. Something that you might use to wash your delicate clothing with.Woolite or some such delicate detergent will suffice. Mix the detergent well into the water and then wet a sponge but don’t apply it like that, you will need to tightly wring the sponge out. Sponge out the stains, but dont scrub and move in the direction of the rug pile. Then you will want to rinse the sponge out with clean water and then do the same thing by applying the sponge and working in the direction of the pile. Continue rinsing the sponge and applying until you have gotten all of the soap out. When you have removed the spot stains this way then you can rinse the whole rug by using a hose to rinse the entire rug.
To dry the lamb’s wool rug, you want to use a towel and apply it to the pile then roll the rug out while squeezing out excess water. When you have squeezed out the excess water and the rug is no longer dripping wet you want to lay it outside flat to dry on a cement drive or an area that will not get the rug dirty. When it is semi dry you can then use a wet/dry vacuum to get out any excess water and allow it to sun dry again for a time. Once it is fully dry, then you can lay it back down in the house. Be sure that you don’t walk on the lamb’s wool rug until it is fully dry.
