A dirty toothbrush has many disgusting germs that can be harmful but there are several ways to clean a toothbrush and keep it germ free. It is important to remember that hands should be washed with soap and warm water before a toothbrush is handled. Also a toothbrush should be washed by running hot water over it for a few seconds before and after every use.
Hydrogen Peroxide Mix
One of the best methods to keep a toothbrush germ free is to mix one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water and swish the toothbrush around in the mixture for at least thirty seconds before using. If desired the toothbrush can be rinsed in warm water to get rid of the taste of peroxide. Mouthwash that contains alcohol can be used in place of peroxide.
Soaking Method
Another good way to clean a toothbrush is to soak it. A good solution to soak a toothbrush in is undiluted vinegar and to soak it overnight every week or two. It does not need to be soaked every night. The vinegar will kill most of the germs and bacteria.
Boiling Water
Boiling water can also be used for cleaning a toothbrush. An easy way to do this is to place a toothbrush in a cup or mug and poor enough boiling water in the mug or cup to cover the bristles. For best results the toothbrush should be left in the mug for three to five minutes.
Bleaching
Bleach is another very effective way to clean a toothbrush. Mix one part bleach with one part water in a cup. About a fourth cup of each is enough just as long as the toothbrush bristles are covered. It should be swished around in the bleach mixture for about thirty seconds and then rinsed thoroughly before using the toothbrush.
Put Your Toothbrush in the Dishwasher
Washing a toothbrush occasionally in the dishwasher is another great method to use. It may seem a little odd but it will deep clean the toothbrush and rid it of unwanted germs and bacteria. Make certain that the toothbrush is placed on the top rack to keep it from melting from the heat. Run the dishwasher through its regular cycle and use dishwasher detergent.
There are many effective ways to clean a toothbrush, but it is important to note that after so many uses a toothbrush has to be replaced. Dentists recommend that a toothbrush be replaced every three to four months. It is also a good idea to replace a toothbrush after having a cold or the flu.
