How I Clean Hairbrushes

Clean My Hairbrush

Your hairbrush is an important aspect of your hygiene routine. It can keep your hair nice and neat and when it is cleaned well, it can get through your hair in just a few minutes. It is important to clean your hairbrush on a regular basis to remove the hair and any buildup that may get there over time. But what are the right steps to helping you clean your hairbrush?

To clean your hairbrush, you must start by removing the hair with a comb or another pointed object. You can then dip it into some water with shampoo and clean off the bristles with an old toothbrush. Give the hairbrush some time to dry before you decide to use it again.

Keeping your hairbrush cleaned out will help it last a lot longer. Let’s take a closer look at some of the steps that you can use to clean out your hairbrush and keep it working well for a long time to come.

Steps to Cleaning a Hairbrush

Cleaning your hairbrush will not take a lot of time. You will be able to master the skills to doing this quickly and once you get it down, you will find it is easier the next time. You will need a few items to help you get started. These items include:

  • Old toothbrush
  • Scissors
  • Baking soda
  • Gentle shampoo
  • Bowl of warm water
  • A comb

Whether you have a brush that is made out of plastic or wood, you will be able to use the same steps to get the brush cleaned. Some of these steps include:

Remove the Hair

Start by taking the extra comb and use it to remove the hair from the base of your brush. A comb with a long tail at the end is the best for this. If you do not have a comb like this, then get a pencil or a pen to help. For the stubborn hair that will not come away, you can use scissors to cut into it a bit.

Dip and Shake

This section will take a bit longer. You will need to fill up a bowl or the bathroom sink with warm water. Add a little gentle shampoo into the water and then swish it around to make suds. When. You need extra cleaning power, you can add a few teaspoons of baking soda into the water too.

If you are using a plastic brush, you can submerge the whole thing in water. Let it sit there for three to five minutes. If the brush has a soft padding where the bristles touch it, you can dip the bristles into the water, but make sure to keep the padding dry here.

For a wooden brush, you should not submerge the entire thing. This may cause damage to the wood and its finish. Just submerge the bristles like we discussed above for the soft padding on the plastic brush.

You can then dip and shake the brush a few times. This is going to loosen and remove the oils, product buildup and dead skin cells that are on the brush at that time. If your brush isn’t too dirty, this will be enough to remove most of the buildup that is on the brush as well.

Use a Toothbrush

In some cases, the brush is going to be very dirty. When this happens, it may be time to bring in an old toothbrush to clean the bristles and the base. To do this, you can dip the toothbrush into some soapy water and then scrub on each bristle as well. Start at the base and work your way up. You can scrub the other edges of the brush to get all that buildup off the brush.

Rinse and Dry

Once you have had a chance to clean the hairbrush, you should rinse it off under a stream of cool water. If you do not want to get the brush too wet, you can sprinkle a little water on the base and then use a cloth to help wipe it down. Let the brush dry, with the bristles facing down, and then it is ready to go. Repeat these steps with any brush you own.

How Often Should I Clean My Hairbrush?

Many may wonder how often they should clean their hairbrush. There are no hard or fast rules regarding the amount of times you will need to clean the hairbrush. It can depend on the products that you use in the hair, how often you brush your hair, and even the type of hair that you would use. Some of the tips that you can use to help determine how often you should clean your hairbrush includes:

  • If you use a lot of hairspray, gels, and styling creams in your hair on a regular basis, you should clean the hairbrush once every week or two to make sure those products are not going to get stuck in the brush.
  • If you don’t use product often in your hair, you can go three to four weeks without having to clean the brush
  • To make cleaning easier when you do it, you should remove all the hair that accumulates in the bristles every few days.

No matter how often you choose to use your hairbrush, it could start to act like a sponge. This makes it so that it will trap a lot of things in the bristles and can become a mess. This makes it more difficult to use overall. Cleaning out the brush will help to make the brush more efficient and will help you take care of your hair.
